Wood turtle

Glyptemys insculpta

Classe Reptiles
Ordre Testudines
Famille Émydidés
Statut UICN En danger

Unlike other turtle species in Quebec, but like the spiny softshell turtle, the sex of the wood turtle is genetically determined and not based on the temperature during incubation.

Reproduction

This species has a rather late sexual maturity which is reached between the ages of 14 and 18 years old. Mating takes place in Spring and Fall. Eggs are laid anywhere from the end of May to the beginning of July (most commonly in June). The eggs, generally between 6 and 11 of them, will hatch at the end of summer, mainly in August and September.

Alimentation

Omnivorous, these animals feed on berries, tender plant leaves, mushrooms and insects.

Prédateurs

Raccoon and striped skunk are big predators of their eggs and young. Offspring can also be prey to certain fish and birds such as crow.

Longévité

In the wild, up to 46 years; in captivity over 50 years.
