The hen reaches maturity and lays eggs (even without a rooster) at 5 to 9 months of age, depending on the race. Oviparous, its eggs are similar to ova, fertilized or not, depending on whether a rooster is present.

Reproduction

Depending on the species and the age, between 6 and 9 months, the hen lays 1 or two eggs per day throughout the year (100 to 300 eggs per year), except in temperate climates where it ceases laying between August and December. The hen incubates a group of 8 to 12 eggs for 19 to 21 days. After hatching, the chicks spend 2 to 3 months with their mother.

Alimentation

Omnivorous, feeding on grasses, terrestrial invertebrates, herbaceous leaves.

Longévité

Up to 15 years.
