Alpaca

Lama pacos

Classe Mammifères
Famille Camélidés

Wool produced by alpacas is of a remarkably high quality. It is soft, warm, resistant and lighter than sheep’s wool. Depending on the size of the animal, an alpaca can yield an average of 2.5 kilos of wool.

Reproduction

Mating can occur throughout the year. After a gestation period of 11 months, the female gives birth to 1 baby, which will be weaned around 6 months old.

Alimentation

Herbivorous, feeding on grass, grains and hay. Alpacas cut the grass instead of tearing it away, which benefits the regeneration.
