The white-tailed deer is the most abundant cervid in North America. This species is often mistaken for other deer species found in Europe and Asia.

Reproduction

From the age of 18 months old, mating takes place between October and November. 1 or 2 fawns are born between late May and mid-June after a 6 ½ month gestation period and are weaned after 4 months.

Alimentation

Herbivorous, feeding on leaves, twigs and herbaceous plants.

Prédateurs

Grey wolf, coyote and cougar. The young can also be the prey of black bear, bobcat and Canada Lynx.

Longévité

In the wild, 6 to 8 years and around 15 years in captivity.
