Females of the deer species do not sport antlers. The caribou, however, is the only exception to the rule. They lose their antlers later than the males do. This allows them to forage and defend themselves if threatened.

Reproduction

From 18 to 30 months old, mating takes place between late September and early November. A single fawn is born in June after an approximate 7 ½ month gestation period and is weaned after 4 months.

Alimentation

Herbivorous, feeding on lichen, moss, grasses, bark, leaves and twigs.

Prédateurs

Grey wolf and grizzly bear. Fawns can be the prey of Canada Lynx, black bear, wolverine and golden eagle.

Longévité

Up to 12 years in the wild and 15 in captivity.
