Most horses are shod to avoid wearing down their hooves. Shoes are nailed to the horn of the hoof. The first horseshoes date back to the 9th century.

Reproduction

From the age of two and a half, mating takes place in spring or summer. After an approximate 11 month gestation period, the mare generally gives birth to only one foal which will be weaned around 7 months old.

Alimentation

Herbivore, feeding on grass, grain and hay.

Prédateurs

Human and wolf.

Longévité

Around 25 years.
