There once were up to 40 million bison in North America. Hard to believe that the largest land mammal on the continent has come so close to extinction.

Reproduction

The female is sexually mature at 2 years old and the male at 2 or 3 years old. Mating takes place between early July and mid-September. A single calf is born between May and early June after an approximate 9 month gestation period and is weaned after 7 months.

Alimentation

Herbivorous, feeding on herbaceous plants, sedges, rushes and lichens.

Prédateurs

Calves can be the prey of grizzly bear, black bear, grey wolf and cougar.

Longévité

Up to 20 years in the wild and 24 in captivity.
