There are hundreds of races of cows in the world. In Canada, 90% of herds are made up of Holsteins, those black-and-white cows often seen grazing in pastures. Holsteins have outstanding milk production.

Reproduction

As of 1 or 2 years, depending on the breed, the cow may mate at any time. Females give birth to one calf, occasionally 2, after a gestation of about 9 months. The calf is weaned at the age of 6 to 8 months.

Alimentation

Herbivore, eats grass on pasture or dry hay in the barn.

Longévité

Up to 24 years.
