Wapiti is an Indigenous word meaning “white rump”, characteristic of this species whose rump is lighter than the rest of its coat.

Reproduction

Cows reach maturity at 2 years of age while the bull must wait 3 years to breed. Breeding takes place between August and October. In late May, early June, following a gestation period of 8 ½ months, the female gives birth to one fawn that is weaned after 4 months.

Alimentation

Herbivorous, feeding on leaves, twigs and herbaceous plants.

Prédateurs

Grey wolf, grizzly bear, cougar. The young are also prey to the black bear.

Longévité

In nature, up to 15 years. Around 20 years in captivity.
