The red fox uses its bushy tail as protection from the cold. When sleeping, it curls into a ball to conserve heat and uses its tail as a blanket into which it sticks its muzzle.

Reproduction

Sexually mature at 10 months. Mating occurs between December and March. The 4-7 cubs are born between March and May after a gestation period of 2 months, and are weaned after 4-5 weeks.

Alimentation

Carnivorous, feeding principally on small mammals, carrion, birds, frogs, insects, but also eats berries.

Prédateurs

Canadian lynx, bobcat, coyote, wolverine, gray wolf and black bear.

Longévité

Up to 10 years in the wild and up to 12 years in captivity.
