The long spatula-shaped bill is characteristic of this species. The male is black, with a dark-green head, a white chest and brown body. This dabbler is a surface-feeding duck.

Reproduction

In April or May, the female lays between 8 and 12 eggs and incubates them for 21 to 25 days, unassisted by the male. The ducklings take their maiden flight at around 8 weeks of age.

Alimentation

The northern shoveler is omnivore, feeding as much on seeds and lentil as on mollusks, insects, small fish and plankton.

Prédateurs

Its main predators are the seagull, the crow, the skunk and the raccoon.

Longévité

Up to 20 years in the wild.
