Like the wood duck, this small diving duck nests in tree cavities or nesting boxes. Males pull out all the stops to seduce females, including an elaborate courtship ritual of head-raising, movements of the head towards the back, etc.

Reproduction

From the age of 2 years old, the female will lay between 8 and 10 eggs in spring. It incubates them for about two weeks without the help of the male. The ducklings first flight occurs arround 8 weeks old.

Alimentation

It mostly feeds on larvae and insects, small crustaceans, molluscs and fish eggs. It can complete its diet with seeds and aquatic plants.

Prédateurs

During nidification, the American marten, the American black bear and the squirrel are the main threat to the eggs and the ducklings. After the first flight, almost every carnivorous mammal and bird of prey can represent a danger for the species.

Longévité

Up to 10 years in the wild.
