American porcupine

Erethizon dorsatum

Contrary to popular belief, porcupines do not throw their quills. However, they sometimes release them when swinging their tail in the direction of a predator.

Reproduction

In Quebec, sexually mature at 1 year. Mating occurs between October and December. A single baby is born between mid-May and July after a gestation period of 7 months, and is weaned after 2-14 weeks.

Alimentation

Herbivorous, feeding on bark, sapwood, leaves, shoots and various plants.

Prédateurs

Fisher, wolverine, Canadian lynx, bobcat, coyote, cougar, gray wolf and certain birds of prey.

Longévité

Around 5 to 7 years in the wild and up to 10 years in captivity.
