The coyote is a predator and a key player in its ecosystem. It usually attacks small and medium-sized preys, including rodents, and thus contributes to controlling their population.

Reproduction

Sexually mature at 1 to 2 years. Mating occurs between February and March. The 5-6 pups are born between April and May after a gestation period of 9 weeks, and are weaned after 5-8 weeks.

Alimentation

Carnivorous , feeding principally on mammals such as deer, Canadian beaver, bighorn sheep, river otters, but also eats fish, birds, insects, fruit and carrion.

Prédateurs

Gray wolf, cougar, Canadian lynx, bobcat and black bear; young may also be taken by golden eagle.

Longévité

Around 6 to 8 years in the wild and up to 15 years in captivity.
