The river otter is well adapted to water and can stay under for up to 4 minutes, although it usually surfaces sooner. Underwater, muscle valves keep its nostrils and ears closed.

Reproduction

Sexually mature at 2 years. Mating occurs between March and April. The 2-3 cubs are generally born between March and April after a delayed implantation (7½-10½ months) followed by an active gestation period of 2 months, and are weaned after 12-16 weeks.

Alimentation

Carnivorous, feeding principally on fish, but also takes crayfish, frogs, molluscs, insects and terrapins.

Prédateurs

Gray wolf, coyote, Canadian lynx, bobcat and great-horned owl.

Longévité

Up to 13 years in the wild and around 20 years in captivity.
