The domestic yak plays a major role in the economy of populations that raise them. Greatly respected in Tibet, the yak is essential to the survival of Tibetans as it is their greatest source of food, clothing and shelter. The status of the wild yak, Bos mutus is considered as vulnerable.

Reproduction

The female mates between July and August starting from 2 years old. After about 8 ½ month gestation period she gives birth to one calf between April and May, and it will be weaned around 1 year later. Many variations are possible depending on the breeding conditions.

Alimentation

Herbivorous, feeding on grasses, moss, lichen, herbaceous plants, shrubs and other available plants.

Prédateurs

Wolf can attack the calves and the sick or wounded. Wild yaks are still illegally hunted by man.

Longévité

Up to 20 years in captivity and in the wild.
