Red panda
Ailurus fulgens
The red panda is a small carnivore closely related to skunks, raccoons and weasels. The only member of the ailuridae family, it looks like a slender raccoon with autumn colors. Despite its panda name, it is only distantly related to the giant panda. It has long been classified in the procyonidae family with the raccoon, but recent genetic analyzes have made possible to classify the red panda in its own family.
Reproduction
Female and male reach sexual maturity around the age of 18-20 months. Mating can occur between January and March. The gestation period is between 114 and 145 days. The female gives birth to one to four cubs, rarely five.
Alimentation
In the wild, more than 90% of its diet consists of bamboo. It also feeds herbs, roots, fruits, larvae, mice, lizards, fledglings and eggs.
Prédateurs
In addition to human, leopards, snow leopards and yellow-throated martens.
Longévité
Up to 15 years in the wild.
