Gelada baboon is a unique species because of many aspects, but especially because it is the only primate that is an herbivore. The very impressive canines of the males are not used to kill preys, but to impress rivals in order to gain some females.

Reproduction

The female reaches sexual maturity around the age of 4-5 years and the male around 5-7 years of age. Mating can occur throughout the year. Gestation lasts between 175 and 188 days. The female gives birth to a single offspring, rarely two, which will be weaned between the ages of 1 year and 1 ½ years.

Alimentation

Herbivorous, it feeds mainly on grass and complements its diet with seeds, roots, flowers, fruits and animal preys, including insects.

Prédateurs

In addition to humans, large carnivores and raptors.

Longévité

An average of 14 years in the wild.
