ZOO SAUVAGE DE SAINT-F\u00c9LICIEN \u2013 July 5, 2018 \u2014 The Zoo sauvage de Saint-F\u00e9licien will welcome three orphaned bear cubs in the coming weeks. These three brothers lost their grizzly bear mother following a collision with a vehicle on a highway in Montana, United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The cubs were taken in by the state and temporarily placed in a shelter. However, they needed to find a permanent home. Through intermediaries and thanks to the communication network within the zoo community, we learned that the cubs needed help. A few minutes later, we responded that we were ready to take them in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The response from the Montana team was quick and positive. At last, an opportunity presented itself for the cubs. The state\u2019s population has been following the cubs\u2019 story since the incident on June 6. People did not want euthanasia to be the only possible outcome. They are extremely relieved by the positive turn of events\u2014especially that the siblings can remain together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Zoo\u2019s grizzly bear pair is aging, and a new generation was needed. Since it is difficult to find this subspecies in zoos, the opportunity to welcome cubs was a great one. The older pair will be moved into the habitat of the Parc des sentiers de la nature, which had been created to house the three brown bears from the former Quebec Zoo and where they lived for five years. The cubs will eventually be introduced into the habitat in the walking area, at the appropriate time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
An agreement will soon be signed between the government of Montana and the Zoo sauvage regarding the care of the cubs. After that, the transfer process will begin. A few weeks will be required to complete all the procedures. The receiving zoo had to be accredited to meet Montana\u2019s requirements. The Zoo sauvage is accredited by CAZA (Canada\u2019s Accredited Zoos and Aquariums).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Just as the people of Montana have grown attached to the cubs, people in Quebec surely will as well. And even more, they will have the chance to watch them grow and become adults, each with their own personality. What a beautiful adventure is beginning.
